DIANA, IN MEMORIAM
It is ten years ago precisely that Diana, The Princess of Wales died. And in memory of her life and death I thought it appropriate to include a few thoughts here on Astrolutely.com. They come in the form of a chapter in my book, Starstruck.

Weekly Hello!
5th May 2008 - 11th May 2008

When a planet turns retrograde there is a subtle change in its influence. Of course, we're used to little Mercury who gums up the pipe-works of travel and communication when in retreat, but Jupiter's reverse thrust is less common. And this planet heads into retrograde on the 9th. Jupiter is synonymous with expansion, inflation, immoderation and drama-fuelled events, so the next few weeks could bring us many fascinating celebrity or royal stories. Then again both World Wars broke out on a retrograde Jupiter and Princess Diana died... In personal terms we are beginning a period in which we begin to question our actions which may have been the result of ego-driven impulses; we have another bite at a great opportunity we may have missed. Going over old ground always has its compensations.

Month Ahead
1st May 2008 - 31st May 2008

With Saturn turning direct (3rd) and Jupiter retrograde (9th) this is going to be a significant month for the global economy, if not a lot more besides: tough actions and realistic measures taken on or near the 3rd and 22nd may not be enough to stem a growing lack of confidence in banking systems and governments. The fortunes of certain political parties and leaders could change dramatically and, despite the sun's transit of the peaceable sign of Taurus, the divisions between certain nations and individuals may never have been greater. Nonetheless, May does open on a beautiful Grand Trine in earth signs (Venus in Taurus trine Pluto in Capricorn and Saturn in Virgo) so some of us will be happy and successful! The new moon of the 5th is a great time to make and receive romantic proposals - or indeed offers of any kind - while the full moon in Scorpio on the 20th comes with a theme of sacrifice and ends-of-chapters. And, with Mercury turning retrograde on the 26th, do you need me to remind you to tie up arrangements and make your most important connections well before that date.

Penny Thornton 2008: Hello!
Hello! Given the dire prophecies of Nostradamus about the year 1999 it was something of a relief that we made the transition into the new millennium without the earth flipping on its axis! But what, I wonder, what would Nostradamus have made of the approaching planetary alignments?

For the past thirteen years Pluto has been moving through Sagittarius - and if you want an example of Pluto's work in this expansive fire sign we need look no further than the rise and rise of the Internet, the huge influence of the media on our lives, not to mention the cult of celebrity - but on January 24th 2008 Pluto enters the controlling sign of Capricorn. If we go back in time to previous eras when Pluto was in Capricorn we find that Marco Polo went to China (1270), thus transforming trade between the West and East, and by some great cosmic coincidence the Shanghai World Financial Centre is set to be completed in 2008; in 1517 Martin Luther posted his ninety-five protests on the door of Wittenberg Cathedral thereby precipitating the end of the thousand-year old dominion of the Church, and in 1776 the Declaration of Independence was signed, which to this day forms the basis of the US democracy. So, Pluto in Capricorn is all about ending age-old orders and beginning new ones. My own feeling is that we shall see the formation of a world government during this sixteen-year long Pluto-in-Capricorn period, the beginning elements of which are already visible in such institutions as the European Union and the International Monetary Fund.

Not only Pluto but also Jupiter will be in Capricorn throughout 2008. This is terrifically good news for members of this sign since it signals a year of plenty - and the Arians, Cancerians and Librans can also expect a pretty good twelve months. However, if you are born in the early degrees of those signs - around the 21st of December, March, June and September - Pluto will transform certain aspects of your life without so much as a by your leave, so fasten your seat belts... In general terms, we are likely to see even more draconian measures to uphold the law, limit immigration and deal with terrorism, and we will be amazed at the lengths certain dictators will be prepared to go to hang onto their power.

But enough of politics. Since Capricorn has much to do with time, we can expect a revolution in the ageing process over the next twenty years. Anti-oxidants and pentopeptides aside, science will find the key to ageing (or non-ageing, as the case may be) so we will all be living longer and looking absolutely fabulous. Senior citizens will rule the world! As far as fashion goes this year, we can expect a kick-back to times of austerity - think 1930's and '40's - and some interesting use of technology with fabrics (materials that change colour or shape according to body temperature or a carefully concealed switch). Hair styles will be shorter, sharper and sleek.

Saturn has just started its tour of duty in Virgo so we are only just beginning to see the positive changes that will come about in health and education. And if you have been rather lax about recycling and generally reining in excesses that contribute to global warming prepare to be forced to change the habits of a lifetime. One of the growth areas in business will be companies that help protect the environment and utilize alternative power sources to gas, oil and electricity. The long-awaited flu epidemic may come about during this two-year transit, although Saturn will also hasten and improve the efficacy of treatments and vaccines. It is the Virgos among us who now have an opportunity to reveal their true worth and gain respect in the eyes of the world, yet times will be hard and economies will have to be made. (And this trend may also be apparent in the lives of Pisceans, Geminians and Sagittarians.)

Since Uranus, the planet of change and innovation, is moving through Pisces, the opposite sign to Virgo, there is something of a push-pull effect going on this year; it is almost as though as soon as one major breakthrough occurs, whether it be in medicine, finance, peace or politics, a counter movement does its best to block it, denigrate it and deny it. So progress is slow. The reformers will have a tough time in 2008, although they will gain ground from 2009 onwards. As for the world economy, there is roughly a year to go before a severe correction can be expected. And I imagine that the eclipses of 21 February and 1 August may have much to do with the rise and fall and fall of the money markets.

Mystical and illusory Neptune continues its journey through Aquarius, so we will continue to see amazing developments in technology - will we know the difference between reality and virtual reality? Saturn is no longer holding back the Neptunian tide, so expect politicians and leaders to be even less accountable for their actions. Aquarians, Leos, Scorpios and Taureans will be a little more vulnerable to deception and loss yet it is these signs who can expect to scale the heights of love and romance and to experience those magical soul-to-soul connections.

So, here we are, on the threshold of another New Year. Will it bring us our heart's desire or will we be fending off those slings and arrows of fate? With this in mind I will leave you with the bidding of the ancient Chinese proverb: May you live in interesting times.
